90 Mile Beach Campground: A Coastal Camping Experience
90 Mile Beach Campground offers a classic Australian beach camping experience, providing access to the seemingly endless stretch of sand that gives the area its name. This campground is a popular choice for those seeking a relaxed coastal getaway, with the rhythmic sounds of the ocean providing a constant backdrop.
Setting Up Camp at 90 Mile Beach Campground:
Campsites at 90 Mile Beach Campground are small to medium in size, and most are situated on some degree of incline, so levelling your setup is a must. The ground is primarily sandy, so be sure to pack sand pegs to secure your tent or other camping structures. There are no powered sites available, and no camp kitchen is provided, so self-sufficiency is key.
Location and Amenities:
While 90 Mile Beach Campground offers a tranquil beachside setting, stocking up on essentials requires a short drive. The small general store in Golden Beach is just a few kilometres away for basic needs, while a larger shopping centre is located about 30 minutes away in Sale.
Campfires are permitted at 90 Mile Beach Campground, allowing for a traditional camping atmosphere (firewood is BYO). Beach fishing is a popular pastime, although during a recent visit, choppy waters made for a less-than-successful fishing trip. Remember that a Victorian fishing licence is required for most fishing activities.
A short beach walk will lead you to the Trinculo shipwreck, offering a glimpse into the area's maritime history. However, hiking trails are limited in the immediate vicinity. Mosquitoes can be present, so insect repellent is recommended. Flies are generally less of a problem, though this can depend on the time of year.
Reasonable Telstra reception was available at campsite C6 during a recent stay, but coverage may vary at other sites. Tree cover can be dense in some areas, potentially limiting solar panel efficiency and satellite internet options.
Dogs are welcome at 90 Mile Beach, but must be kept on a lead at all times. Shoreline Drive Campgrounds 1-19 are currently free, however it's essential to check for updates as prices are subject to change.
Being a popular destination, 90 Mile Beach Campground can get busy, meaning limited privacy between campsites. The beach itself is about 100 metres from the camping area. There is no river nearby, and swimming in the sometimes choppy surf can be challenging. Showers are not available on-site, but paid showers can be found at the general store in Golden Beach. There are no toilets at the campground. Potable water is also not available at the campground itself, so ensure to bring your own water, however there is water available at the general store at Golden Beach.
The access roads to 90 Mile Beach Campground are paved, making it accessible to 2WD vehicles, campervans, and caravans. While some camping areas have soft sand, these are usually easy to identify and avoid.

Trekie Score: 6 / 10
My time at 90 Mile Beach Campground had some highs and lows. The proximity to the beach and the soothing sound of the ocean were definitely big pluses. However, the absence of essential facilities like toilets and showers, combined with the sometimes crowded atmosphere, made the experience less enjoyable. Having to bring all my own water was also a bit of a pain. So, while it's okay for a quick beach trip if you're willing to rough it, I'd probably choose a different campground for a longer stay. But I would still go there again for a short camping getaway. It gets a Trekkie score of 6 out of 10 from me.
