Congo Campground: Beachside Bliss at the Mouth of Congo Creek
Congo Campground, a popular haven for nature lovers, offers a delightful blend of creek and beachside camping on the stunning NSW south coast. Situated at the mouth of Congo Creek, this campground provides easy access to both creek waters and the rolling waves of the ocean, making it an ideal destination for families, fishing enthusiasts, and anyone seeking a relaxing coastal getaway.
Location, Location, Location: Discovering Congo Campground's Appeal
Congo Campground boasts a prime location. Nestled where Congo Creek meets the sea, campers have a choice of swimming spots – the calm, shallow creek perfect for kids (though be mindful of the strong current) or the expansive beach just steps away. The easy access to both creek and beach is a major drawcard for this campground.
Getting There and Amenities
Getting to Congo Campground is a breeze! It's conveniently located not far from the bitumen, making it easily accessible for caravans and 2WD vehicles. The closest town with a major supermarket is Moruya, an easy 18-minute drive away, so stocking up on supplies is no hassle.
While Congo Campground offers a fantastic natural setting, it also provides some essential amenities. Modern, unisex toilets with flushing cisterns are available on-site and are regularly cleaned and well-stocked with toilet paper. Shower cubicles are also provided, but it's a bring-your-own water and shower setup. So, pack your portable shower or be prepared to use a bucket – it's all part of the camping experience!
Campsite Setup and Atmosphere at Congo Campground
The campsites are generally medium-sized, mostly flat, with some gentle inclines in certain areas. The ground is primarily grassy with a sand base. While this provides a comfortable surface for tents, it's worth noting that this is a popular campground. Campsites are relatively close together, so don't expect complete seclusion. The trade-off for the fantastic location is less privacy than you might find in more remote campgrounds.
Nature's Calling:
Fishing is a popular activity at Congo Campground, thanks to its location at the mouth of the creek and its proximity to the beach. Anglers have plenty of options to cast a line and try their luck. While some mosquitoes may be present (depending on the time of year), they are generally not overwhelming, and flies are typically few in number.
Connectivity and Pet Policy:
In today's connected world, staying in touch is important. Congo Campground offers excellent Telstra reception, with impressive download speeds of around 290MB and upload speeds of 20MB. This makes Starlink largely unnecessary for those relying on Telstra. As part of a national park, pets are unfortunately not allowed at Congo Campground. However, the abundant natural beauty and wildlife are sure to keep you entertained.
Campfire Considerations:
Important note: Fires are not allowed at Congo Campground. So, if campfire cooking is essential for your camping experience, you'll need to bring alternative cooking methods.

Trekie Score: 8 / 10
I had a fantastic coastal camping experience at Congo Campground, thanks to its prime location right at the mouth of Congo Creek. The easy access was a big plus, and having toilets and shower cubicles (even if it's a BYO water situation!) make it comfortable for families and anyone wanting a mix of beach and creek activities. Sure, the campsites are fairly close together, so it's not the most private spot. But honestly, the overall appeal of this Campground and its stunning natural surroundings totally outweighed that for me. In fact, I'd give it a 8 out of 10 – it's a beautiful campground and one I'd definitely stay at again.
